Mario Hoffmann and the J&T group may face corruption charges

The special prosecutor Dušan Kováčik may consider resuming the probe into the corruption case of Mario Hoffmann and the J&T group on the Turks and Caicos Caribbean islands dating back to 2005-08. The islands fall under UK jurisdiction, and Hoffmann and J&T provided their Prime Minister, cabinet ministers and ruling party bribes totaling $9m to facilitate building a $600m resort. In 2012, Hoffmann settled the case out of court with the UK authorities—he paid $7m compensation, returned land in the islands, and was not charged with corruption. Kováčik stopped the Slovak probe in 2012, much as in all other cases linked to politicians and oligarchs.
