The €500 tourism vouchers, mandatory for companies with over 50 workers, are a lucrative business opportunity for companies issuing the vouchers. They charge 3% of the vouchers’ value from companies that then give the vouchers to their employees, plus 10-15% from the hotels where the employees stay. The fees may come to tens of millions of euros annually. The issuers have therefore developed special products for the tourism vouchers. This puts smaller hotels into a difficult situation, as they face a 15% fee from booking.com if an employee uses the portal to book the stay and another 15% fee from the voucher company.
