Fico blocked the Constitutional Court, he wants Šefčovič to appoint him Chairman

The ruling coalition blocked the repeat vote of candidates for Constitutional Court judges. Since President Andrej Kiska would not appoint Robert Fico as the Court’s Chairman, the coalition will elect the candidates in June, after Kiska’s term expires. Fico hopes Maroš Šefčovič wins the election and appoints him the Chairman. Until then, the Court will apparently only have four of 13 judges and won’t be able to issue any rulings. Smer deems this a non-event.

The coalition party Most-Híd is unhappy with the outcome. Béla Bugár, its leader, says relations with Smer are “at the freezing point” and it is irresponsible to block the Court. Even some Smer MPs are allegedly unhappy about Fico, who thwarted the coalition’s agreement on electing six candidates, allowing the Court to function provisionally.

President Andrej Kiska says the coalition is undermining people’s trust in politicians’ ability to manage the state honestly.
