Robert Fico wants to be Constitutional Court chairman
The Smer party has put forward ex-PM Robert Fico as a candidate for Constitutional Court (CC) judge. Back in 2014, Fico aspired to end his carrier as Slovakia’s president, now he wants to be the CC chairman. If parliament selects him as a candidate, which seems likely, President Andrej Kiska will refuse to appoint him. Apparently, Fico believes he will have the trust of a future president: Smer’s candidate Miroslav Lajčák is a top contender. It seems parliament will try not to nominate 18 candidates, in order to prevent Kiska from filling all nine vacant places at the CC. This could paralyze the CC.
Among the candidates for CC judges are Deputy Justice Ministers Monika Jankovská (Smer) and Edita Pfundtner (Most-Híd).
