Coal subsidies to end in 2023
The government approved the program for transformation of the Horná Nitra region that foresees ending the over €100m annual subsidies for coal mining to private mine HBP in 2023, instead of the initial 2030. The end to subsidies should result in lower electricity prices. With the help of EU funds, the government will subsidize projects for wagon repairs, tomato and fish farms, tourism, and research in the region. These should provide jobs for over 3,000 HBP miners. Both HBP and other firms and institutions will be allowed to submit the projects.
