25% tariff on every car from the European Union
“We are going to put a 25% tariff on every car from the European Union,” said U.S. President Donald Trump. The tariff is intended to revive U.S. manufacturing, and is also being used as a chip in trade negotiations. Of the three Slovak car makers, only Volkswagen exports cars to the USA. Last year, 20% of its output – some 70,000 SUV models Audi Q7, VW Touareg and Porsche Cayenne – was exported there. The new Jaguar Land Rover plant in Nitra, to launch production in coming weeks, also plans to export to the U.S. market. A Finance Ministry study estimates that the tariffs will have only a small impact on the Slovak economy.
