Saková is new Interior Minister

The Smer party proposed Denisa Saková, who served as deputy minister under Robert Kaliňák, as the new Interior Minister. She was in charge of the public administration reform ESO as well as large IT projects, with dubious results in both cases. She managed the €15m IT tender in 2010, in which, according to special prosecutor Vasiľ Špirko, Robert Kaliňák and Ján Počiatek received a €0.5m bribe.

President Andrej Kiska met with Saková yesterday, and will appoint her on Thursday. “The nomination of Kaliňák’s deputy is a missed opportunity. The government failed to send a clear signal that it is serious about regaining trust,” he commented. The Constitution does not give the President the right to refuse a ministerial candidate.

Opposition parties as well as activists are protesting the nomination, arguing that she will not bring much-needed change and the police will still be unable to look into the shenanigans of top politicians and oligarchs.
