Fico will not run for president in 2019

The senior coalition party Smer elected new deputy leader at its weekend congress, as Richard Raši (Košice mayor) replaced Marek Maďarič (Culture Minister). Party leader Robert Fico is not giving in to despondency after the party’s dismal performance in recent regional elections and wants to win the party’s fifth general election in 2020. One way to achieve this is through fierce attacks on opposition parties and President Andrej Kiska. Fico also announced he would not run for president in 2019. It was a mistake to run for president in 2014 while also serving as prime minister, he explained.
