The state rail carrier ŽS Slovensko wants to test hydrogen-powered trains on the Prievidza-Nové Zámky line. It says the investments into the necessary hydrogen infrastructure will be lower compared to the €150m costs of the line’s electrification. By 2025 it wants to turn two diesel trains into hydrogen ones, and if their trial run proves successful, it will remake the remaining ten trains serving the line, too. It will store the hydrogen in Prievidza so that local buses can use it, too. It will seek EU funding for the project.
