Steel pipe firm Železiarne Podbrezová (Vladimír Soták) lost €30m last year after a net profit of €64.7m in 2021-23. Soták criticizes the government for populist handouts and ill-considered fiscal consolidation, and the EU for poor protection of the local steel market. While it benefited from revived demand after the pandemic, last year demand fell and the EU was flooded with cheap steel from Asia and Ukraine. This year will also be challenging, he said.
